Brunswick Heads is a small seaside village situated at the mouth of the Brunswick River on the north coast of New South Wales. Originally inhabited by people of the Bundjalung nation, the Brunswick River was charted by Captain Rous in 1828. The cedar cutters’ activities 20 years later led to the establishing of Brunswick Heads, the first town in what is now Byron Shire. By the 1880s Brunswick Heads was a busy port & a robust little commercial centre. Brunswick’s popularity as a family seaside holiday destination has been assured since the 1920s. Despite the surrounding coastal development, Brunswick Heads has retained its traditional, unspoiled seaside village atmosphere. Surrounded by beach, river, marine park and nature reserve, Brunswick Heads is a paradise for swimming, surfing, boating, fishing, canoeing, walking, cycling and a host of other activities. Timber bridges link the riverside to the safe and peaceful Torakina Beach nestled within the breakwater (ideal for kids) and to the white sandy surf beach (patrolled in summer) that stretches 10kms along the coastline to the south all the way to Byron Bay. The best surf spot is off the north breakwall. The north bank of the river hosts a protected rainforest & the southern bank provides a harbour and small marina for fishing boats and small craft. Mt Warning and Mt Chincogan provide a spectacular hinterland backdrop to the river that meanders up to the small town of Mullumbimby. Brunswick Heads enjoys a pleasant sub-tropical climate with refreshing summer breezes & warm dry winter weather. Located 15 minutes north of Byron Bay and 30 minutes south of Queensland’s Gold Coast. This laid-back seaside village (resident population of around 2000) has loads to offer families, couples and other discerning visitors. Enjoy the quality mix of cafes and restaurants, an eclectic array of specialty and secondhand shops, a Visitors Centre and a variety of activities and recreational pursuits. Brunswick Heads is the perfect place to kick back and unwind yet it’s an easy 15 minute drive to the buzz of Byron Bay’s town centre, beaches and vibrant arts and entertainment scene. Bruns is also ideally situated to provide easy access to the beautiful Byron Shire hinterland and villages just waiting to be explored.
